INTRODUCTION

I am an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Indiana University. My new book, Negotiating Opportunities (Oxford) reveals how privileged students use requests for assistance, accommodations, and attention to secure unfair advantages in school.

Most of my research is qualitative in nature, involving observations and interviews with children, parents, and teachers. Substantively, I focus on inequalities (and especially social class-based inequalities) in education and family life and on the role that culture and social interactions play in producing those inequalities.
